Carrier Corporation, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation,
is the world's largest manufacturer of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment for commercial, residential, and transportation applications.

Willis Carrier designed his first air conditioning system in 1902 to aid a printer who couldn't produce a quality color image because changes in heat and humidity kept changing the paper's dimensions and misaligning the colored inks. In 1915, Carrier and six friends formed the Carrier Engineering Company — a company whose only product was a guarantee to achieve the temperature and humidity their commercial customers required. For nearly 20 years, Carrier's invention continued to be used only in industrial applications.

Comfort cooling for people made its debut in 1924 at a department store in Hudson, Mich. Next, theaters began to provide environmental comfort for their customers. In the late 1920s, small businesses started to use the systems. In 1928, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the installation of a Carrier air conditioning system, and less than a year later, the US Senate ratified their contract for a Carrier system, too. It took only a small step in 1928 to develop a residential "Weathermaker" that heated, cooled, humidified, cleaned, and circulated air in homes. Soon after the Carrier display at the 1939 New York World's Fair, travel by bus, train, and airplane became comfortable with the development of air conditioning systems from Carrier. It didn't matter if you were sitting at home, working, traveling, or being entertained, Carrier cooling systems continued to be the definitive answer to indoor comfort.

Commercial rooftoop units began cooling entire skyscrapers in 1950. Also in 1950, Carrier introduced portable room air conditioning units, which made millions more comfortable. In 1965, indoor home comfort went beyond cooling as the first line of residential heating products was sold under the Carrier brand name. Heat pumps, single units that deliver energy-saving heating and cooling solutions, became a hero during the oil crisis of 1973. (Carrier first developed this concept in 1932.) In 1989, Carrier developed variable capacity, multi-speed heating and cooling systems, making total indoor comfort no longer just an "on" or "off" decision.

Such innovations paved the way for Carrier to demonstrate its technological leadership throughout the history of the HVAC industry and into the 21st century with the newest industry innovations, like the environmentally sound Puron® refrigerant, ComfortHeat™ technology that manages the comfort of heat pump operation, and IdealHumidity™ systems that control temperature and humidity together.

Now headquartered in Farmington, Conn., Carrier manufactures its products in 108 plants spread across six continents. The corporation has a worldwide network of distributors and dealers who sell, install, and service Carrier products in 171 countries. The Carrier name is directly responsible for providing comfortable, reliable, and consistent indoor comfort to millions of people. In addition to the familiar residential and commercial applications, Carrier climate control systems protect the Sistine Chapel, the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, and historic documents at the Library of Congress. From the Mount Vernon home of George Washington, to universities, opera houses, subway systems, and airports around the world, Carrier is everywhere.
