You check the weather app and it says the temperature is 96 degrees. Bad enough, right?


Then you see the “feels like” temperature: 108.


That number can feel a little dramatic, but during an Arkansas summer, it usually has a point. The “feels like temperature” is a way of describing how hot it actually feels to your body once humidity is factored in. And around Central Arkansas, humidity can make a hot day feel even heavier, stickier, and harder to escape.


But what does that mean for the temperature inside your home? And why can your house still feel warm or uncomfortable even when the thermostat says your air conditioner is doing its job?

The “feels like temperature” is not just the air temperature. In the summer, it is usually based on the heat index, which combines the actual temperature with the amount of moisture in the air.
